Someone recently asked for arguments on a forum that I frequent why everyone loves/hates Twilight. This was my response. It’s not as eloquent as I’d like but I think it gets my point across.
" I haven’t read anything of the books beside the first few pages of the first book where the most boring person ever goes into excruciating detail about having breakfast.
As for the movies? I have seen all of the movies, some of them are quite lol-worthy and actually have stuff happen in them (kind of) but for the most part nothing happens. It is just three really boring characters stuck in a stupid love triangle and there is almost no plot development whatsoever in any movie except for the last 10 minutes which forces itself to make something happen so it can lead onto another horrible movie.
The main reason, however, that I hate Twilight is the horrible anti-women message that it is sending to the young girls reading it. It basically tells them that they need to give up themself at any cost for a man. Bella is giving up her family, friends, mortality and identity to be with Edward and doesn’t even bat an eye about it. It’s supposed to be all flowery and romantic but it’s actually quite disgusting that a person is willing to give up everything that they are for the person they love. Does this other person even love WHO you are if you are going to give up everything about you to be closer to them and they let you?
Apart from this is the two viable romantic options. You have Edward, a brooding, creepy stalker that watches you while you sleep without your consent that for some reason can’t control himself in the sack so that when you wake up the next morning you’re covered with bruises. The other option is a sweet, nice guy who just kind of loses it some times if you get him mad, and if you get him mad it’s really your fault if he hurts you, you know? Also, obviously has anger issues.
The whole series glazes over and even glorifies emotional and physical abuse as being romantic and it is horrifying that young women are growing up thinking this is an acceptable form of love.
Love (but not creepy stalker love),
P.S. Don’t get me started on the horrid ‘Pro-life’ message of the most recent film where Bella accidentally falls pregnant and ignores the pleas of others and keeps the baby despite the fact that it’s killing her and breaking her bones as it grows. Everyone else who asks her to get rid of it is shown as unreasonable as she almost dies giving birth. Luckily they have magic vampire blood to save her and when the baby comes out all beautiful it’s awwright because it’s beautiful and alive despite the fact it killed her to give birth to it. But seriously, anyone who calls their child ‘Renesmae’ or whatever should get their fucking tubes tied.
Not to mention it was a rape-baby. “
